In June 2006 NIFES started working with Edinburgh University on their ‘switch and save’ campaign. The campaign aims were simple, they wanted to reduce their energy usage, cut carbon emissions and make crucial financial savings.

The campaign strategy consisted of a pilot campaign to assess the potential success. An 18% reduction in one of the university’s building was achieved. From there, the senior members of staff were briefed and energy co-ordinators and representatives were recruited and trained by NIFES.

NIFES were involved in all aspects of building the campaign; inclusive of campaign promotion materials such as stickers, posters, training and a promotional dvd.

We undertook to do ‘walkarounds’ to show the reps examples of best practice.

The ambitious targets of the university were part of the universities message to the staff and students. The campaign worked on a three tiered approach; university staff, accommodation services and students.

University staff: Staff were targeted with posters and stickers reminding them of the objectives. A number of articles appeared in the university’s publication and NIFES also assisted with use of materials for the website and dvd film. The representatives and energy coordinators were vital appointments for ensuring the success of the campaign.

Accommodation services: They worked to make the buildings more sustainable. Lighting changes saved a substantial sum of £35,000 in the first year alone. When converted into CO2 savings, it equals 211 tonnes per year.

Students: As is the case with all universities, there is a high and frequent turnover so the message is a constant one to ensure the continuing success of the campaign. NIFES advice was to hold events to bring the inclusion of the students into events.

NIFES also suggested metering initiatives to capture data of usage and asses where further saving could be made. Additionally, financial incentives were introduced to energy saving as well.

Renewable energy was also part of the campaign. NIFES advised the University to seek funding from the Government and also the Carbon Trust to ensure the project was viable. 3 Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators have been installed, ensuring a decrease in inefficient energy usage.

The scheme has been award-winning gaining recognition from the Energy efficiency Accreditation 3 times and gaining the following awards; Green award, Scottish Renewables Forum Highly Commended, Green Gown award and a National Energy Efficiency Award.
