Energy Management
Looking after your Energy
More organisations are now placing energy management at the forefront of their business.
The management of energy and following the Carbon Agenda involves a diverse and sometimes complex range of functions:
These can be:

Technologies, operational, control equipment |
| Behavioural |

People influence |

- Policy & Strategy Development
- Energy Training
- Awareness & Motivation Campaigns
- Monitoring & Targeting
- Information Systems & Reporting

- Energy Supply Strategies
ISO50001:2011 Energy Management System Standard
NIFES are fully behind the new global energy management standard, ISO50001:2011, which was launched in June 2011. This is a significant milestone in energy management as it is the first globally recognised Standard in Energy Management.
It will replace the current European Standard, EN16001, which was launched in 2009.
NIFES have been at the forefront of Standards development. We acted as training consultants for Sustainable Energy Ireland when the Irish Energy Management Standard (IS393:2005) was introduced in 2005. We helped apply the Swedish Standard (SS627750) in a Swedish company in the UK. One of our consultants sat on the Committee which developed the European Standard, EN16001:2009.
Examples of our work include:
- Comprehensive implementation of Swedish Standard, SS627750 at a large manufacturing plant in the UK.
- Similar application in a major UK NHS Trust.
- Training auditors in IS393 in Ireland.
- Developing EnMS for a media company and a pub chain to comply with EN16001:2009.
- Developing an EMS for a major UK bank to comply with ISO14001.
Consistency with other systems: The main management system requirements of ISO50001 are similar to those of ISO14001, the global Environmental Management System Standard. Therefore it is relatively easy to move from ISO14001 to ISO50001 once the energy requirements are in place.
The main elements of a compliant system are:
- Energy Policy
- Planning
- Implementation/Operation
- Checking/Corrective Action
- Management Review
This can be summarised in the following flowchart:
