PROJECT DETAILS:LOCHALINE MULTI-AGENCY PROJECT

NIFES SERVICES:BUILDING SERVICES DESIGN & BREEAM

BACKGROUND

A remote community on the sparsely populated North West coast of Scotland needed new school and community facilities. The existing Primary School was re-built incorporating a Fire Station, multipurpose
Community Hall, Nursery School and a flood-lit sports pitch.

OUR APPROACH

NIFES was appointed under the Highland Council Consultancy Framework to provide sustainable Building Services solutions, including:

  • Natural ventilation
  • Wood pellet fuelled heating
  • Rainwater re-cycling
  • Solar water heating, and
  • “Sun-Pipe” natural lighting

An Energy Options Appraisal was carried out to select the ideal low-carbon fuels and the biomass fuelled district heating system was provided to also serve the Nursery and adjacent Doctors’ Surgery.

RESULTS

Our computerised Thermal Model assisted the Architect and Client in understanding the role of the
building fabric in optimising the energy performance and comfort levels.

A principal design consideration was the transport logistics and “delivery miles” associated with supply of construction materials and woodchip fuel supplies. The project also involved the diversion of over-head power supplies, and the incorporation of a water-mist sprinkler installation. It achieved a Very Good BREEAM rating and was successfully completed in September 2012 at a cost of £2.7 million.
