Notting Hill Housing is a large Social Enterprise that has provided affordable housing for Londoners for over 50 years. They are adding to their current stock of 28,000 homes a large scale, mixed-use development in Peckham comprising 330 homes, commercial space and retail.
The mostly derelict site included an existing Energy Centre serving the adjacent Southwark Council Estate that had to be relocated before the construction could commence.
NHH asked NIFES to provide the building services design that includes two Energy Centres, all M&E services and the renewables required to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.
We began by producing an Energy Strategy report that addressed the requirements of NHH’s Policy, Building Regulations and the London Plan.
Working closely with the client and the Design Team we carefully integrated the required renewable energy generation systems into the project. A new Energy Centre was designed and constructed for the adjacent Borough of Southwark, enabling the main site to be cleared for development.
A further Energy Centre incorporating a Combined Heat and Power engine was designed to provide low-carbon, low-cost energy for Wooddene.
The chart below shows the results achieved by our energy strategy when compared with Part L1A of the 2010 Building Regulations.
Our primary focus was to design efficient buildings with a minimal requirement for energy. “Be Lean”.
Having done that, we designed engineering systems that are as efficient as they can be. “Be Clean”.
Only then did we begin to integrate the low and zero carbon generation that included photovoltaic arrays. “Be Green”.
The installations are forecast to reduce CO2 emissions by 287,345 tonnes when compared to the baseline of Part L1A of the 2010 Building Regulations. The tenants and home owners can enjoy efficient homes with low running costs.
