Southmead Health Services NHS Trust in Bristol employs 4,900 staff in 100 buildings, over a 70-acre site.
NIFES were commissioned to carry out a review of the Energy Management Strategy at the Trust and provide a Trust wide Energy Policy. With many technical solutions already in place the emphasis on raising staff awareness was proposed and a campaign was quickly developed.
Before launching its energy campaign, the Trust had an annual utility bill for energy and water of £1.2 million. The Trust set a target of achieving £100,000 in savings over 12 months (an 8% reduction).
With a campaign budget of £25,000 - drawn from its energy and water revenue budget. The Trust made cumulative savings of £149,000 on electricity, gas, oil and water bills over a 20-month period, recouping the cost within four months. Within three years a total of £225,000 savings were achieved.
This success led to the Trust being named runner-up in the ‘best environmental initiative’ category of the national awards run by NHS Estates.
The following campaign strategy was employed:
- a detailed training needs analysis became the basis of a tailor-made campaign designed by NIFES
- the Trust’s board was briefed on the campaign and gave its full commitment
- the campaign was launched by the Chief Executive and the Chairman who signed up to the Government’s ‘Making a Corporate Commitment’ campaign
- the board appointed 20 key managers to take responsibility for the campaign in specified areas
- each key manager received a full one-day energy management training course
- a total of 105 energy monitors also attended a four-hour seminar on practical energy saving measures
- energy awareness booklets were produced and distributed to every member of staff
- a regular series of ‘energy walkabouts’ were conducted by the Chief Executive, Nursing Director and Estates Manager, along with key managers and energy monitors
- posters were displayed and articles published in the Trust’s in-house magazine.
