BACKGROUND

A new “School for the Future” was built on the site of Trinity Upper School, to replace it and to partially incorporate Kingsley Park middle school. The completed £24m complex provides 24,000m² of accommodation for 1,450 pupils, comprising:

  • County-standard Sports Hall
  • All-weather Sports Pitch
  • Fitness Suite and ancillary areas
  • Science Laboratories
  • Maths & Languages Classrooms
  • Student Services
  • Additional Needs
  • ICT Suites
  • Food Technology rooms
  • Library
  • Expressive Arts Studios
  • Design Technology rooms

There are additional administration offices, a new visitors reception area, a whole school chapel, a multi-faith room, new catering facilities and dining area and a multi-purpose atrium.

OUR APPROACH

Thermodynamic simulation modelling was carried out to help us refine our low-carbon design solutions that included bespoke natural ventilation and optimised daylighting.

Where natural ventilation of classrooms was impossible, heat recovery ventilation units were installed, controlled by presence detectors that also controlled the lighting. The Labs, Sports Hall & Changing Areas were equipped with underfloor heating, whilst budget constraints meant that a conventional radiator system was adopted in the classrooms.

RESULTS

The low energy design approach adopted by NIFES helped the client to secure sponsorship from the Carbon Trust and delivered comfortable, affordable buildings.
