William Harvey Hospital Endoscopy Unit

CUSTOMER: EAST KENT HOSPITALS UNIVERSITY NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

PROJECT DETAILS: NEW ENDOSCOPY UNIT

NIFES SERVICES: M&E CONSULTANT AND BREEAM

BACKGROUND

The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford needed a new Endoscopy Unit to meet patient demand, improve efficiency and gain JAG accreditation for full diagnostic screening services.

The Trust needed an M&E consultant with proven healthcare experience and impressive credentials in low-energy design to help meet the BREEAM rating stipulated by Planning. It helped that NIFES could also provide a BREEAM assessment service.

OUR APPROACH

User Group consultations began in January 2012 followed by concept design, environmental modelling and a fully detailed design later in the year, all focussed on achieving an Excellent BREEAM score.

Although a purpose-designed new building was required it was also necessary to extensively re-model the adjacent accommodation and fill-in courtyards to accommodate displaced day-care clinics.

The team successfully overcame site infrastructure challenges from steam and condensate, medical gasses, stand-by generation and obsolete fire alarms.

Following 16 months of construction, testing and commissioning the facility went live in January 2015.

RESULTS

The ground floor is dedicated to patient care facilities with the upper floor providing staff welfare, office and training accommodation. The upper floor also houses the extensive and complex plant and medical equipment areas necessary to serve the clinical needs of the department.

The new 1,800m2 facility provides the required exceptional patient care experience with full JAG accreditation and a low environmental impact.
