PROJECT BACKGROUND
In 2007 Queen Margaret University moved from their previous sites within Edinburgh to a new purpose-designed facility in Musselburgh, on the edge of the city. In addition to providing excellent academic facilities and accommodation for 800 students, they sought to set new standards in sustainable design.
A central Energy Centre uses woodchip as the primary Fuel source, dramatically reducing the carbon emissions associated with the provision of heating and hot water to the entire campus.
OUR APPROACH
The appointed M&E consultant turned to NIFES for the identification of buildings’ heat loadings.
Additionally, NIFES was instrumental in constructing an Energy Supply Agreement which positively drove the biomass plant operation.
SUMMARY
Project Results
The main Academic Building and the Sports/Union Building achieved an “Excellent” BREEAM score – the highest for any University Project in the UK.
NIFES continued to monitor the Campus’ electricity, heating and water consumption and to work with QMU to further reduce the carbon footprint.
