Electricity at Work Compliance Testing

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 are extremely onerous in the workplace and make considerable demands on any employer who uses electricity, however minimal during the normal course of their business. The resources to carry out ‘’in house’’ inspection and testing are often not available and the need for external guidance and practical assistance is therefore common.

NIFES methodology allows considerable flexibility in that NIFES offer to set up systems in the first instance and bring all procedures and records up to the necessary standards. From then onwards, the Client may opt to carry out periodic testing themselves or use local contract labour. The essential point is that systems are put in place to ensure continued safety appraisal and compliance with the Regulations by qualified and experienced personnel. NIFES provide this service to many clients, taking the following approach:

  • Perform a visual condition survey of the fixed electrical switchgear and distribution boards and report on any remedial work required.
  • Produce up-to-date schematic drawings of the electrical installations.
  • Provide an up to date system of records which can be used to record the results of the tests to be carried out.
  • Make an assessment of the extent of testing required.

The results of the visual inspection can then be utilised to define a phased program of tests over a given period of years. The safety of the fixed installation is then confirmed by carrying out the required electrical testing.
