Standby Power Solutions and UPS

The requirement for electrical standby generation, whether it be for an acute hospital or for an IT installation is clear.

For the NHS, this is formalised in the document Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 06-01: Electrical services supply and distribution.

To adhere to this, NIFES firstly considers the requirements within the HTM assessing the site, considering the general requirements of the site, namely:

  • The regime associated with the maintenance of the low voltage standby emergency generators
  • The regime associated with the testing of the low voltage standby emergency generators
  • The fuel arrangements of the generators to ensure their correct operation in the event of a mains failure and the minimum fuel storage requirements

This then allows NIFES to consider it’s fitness for purpose, undersdtaning that situations change from initial installation, this review covers:

  • What design for resilience is in place
  • Installed capacity versus Supply requirements
  • Location of equipment
  • Essential and Non-essential issues
  • Synchronisation issues

Finally, NIFES then considers the overall management of the standby/UPS installations, considering:

  • An assessment of the existing policies and procedures that are in place
  • What is the management structure and who has overall responsibility of the emergency generation equipment and are records of the training recorded
  • Is there adequate training in place for the personnel who maintain the standby equipment
  • What review processes are in place

What NIFES Can Offer

Following the review process, NIFES are able to advise on the most appropriate solution. NIFES then design the installation, considering the connections to the site, sequencing arrangement and change-over switching. NIFES support this with our full project management services using experienced and professional engineers.
